Chair of the Board of Trustees

Arts Taunton is a charitable umbrella body committed to making Somerset’s county town a vibrant, more attractive place in which to live, work and visit.

Our Chair is now planning to step down after 3 years in post, though is remaining as a board member. We are therefore seeking someone to take on this voluntary role.

  • Do you have a passion for the arts, in any of the forms it can take?
  • Are you, or have you been, connected to the arts, education, or youth services?
  • Do you have experience of leading an organisation or a senior team?
  • Can you commit to a monthly meeting?

The Chair should ideally have:

  • Leadership qualities and experience
  • Experience of previous charity governance and committee work
  • Tact and diplomacy
  • Good ‘people’ skills
  • Impartiality, fairness and the ability to respect confidences
  • Knowledge of the type of work undertaken by Arts Taunton and a demonstrable commitment to the role of the arts and culture in having a positive impact on the lives of Taunton Deane residents
  • A commitment to facilitating engagement with the arts by children and young people
  • Wider involvement with the voluntary/arts/cultural/education sectors

Personal Qualities

  • Visible passion and commitment to Arts Taunton, its strategic objectives and cause.
  • Display gravitas to lead the organisation.
  • Ability to engage with a wide range of stakeholders and influencers, including those in the arts sector and donors.
  • Strong inter-personal and relationship-building abilities and be comfortable in an ambassadorial role.
  • Tact and diplomacy, with the ability to listen and engage effectively.
  • Ability to foster and promote a collaborative team environment.
  • Understand the legal duties, responsibilities and liabilities of trusteeship.
  • Good, independent judgement, political impartiality and the ability to think creatively in the context of the organisation and external environment.
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills, including engaging with the press and within public meetings.



  • Experience of chairing a board, or operating at a senior strategic leadership level within an organisation (not necessarily a charity).


  • Experience of charity governance and working with or as part of a board of trustees.
  • Experience of the arts sector or another related to our work eg education or youth.
  • Experience of public speaking.

 Job Description

You will lead the board (directors and trustees) and executive team (self-employed contractors) in fulfilling the charity’s mission and vision agreeing the strategy for the organisation.

You will ensure the good governance of Arts Taunton and that the Board of trustees incorporates the balance of skills, knowledge and experience needed to lead Arts Taunton effectively.

You will work within agreed policies and ensure that the Board reviews and manages major risks and maintains financial discipline and accountability

You will ensure effective oversight of all areas of activity and of the self-employed executive team.  You will represent Arts Taunton at functions, meetings and to the media alongside the founding trustee and executive team.

This is a non-remunerated post.
