Creating a Cultural Strategy is key to fulfilling Taunton’s ambitions as the West Country’s only Garden Town.
We became convinced of the need for a strategy in in 2016/17 when we commissioned research work by Ann Jones and Morag Ballantyne. After many drafts of the Strategy, we transferred its delivery to the Council. This led to the ‘Taunton Transformed’ conference of which we were joint hosts, held in November 2018 in the beautiful setting of Hestercombe.
The Cultural Forum, with representatives of Somerset West & Taunton Council and many other cultural organisations is now working to fine-tune the Strategy and its action plan. Arts Taunton chaired the Forum’s early meetings.
The Strategy will describe a clear vision for arts and culture, outline the current state of cultural provision, consider how Taunton can strengthen its role as a cultural destination, identify priority objectives, and define measures of success. Consultation is at the heart of the process. Work has progressed rapidly during 2019 and the Strategy is due to be complete by the end of the year. It will be a major milestone in the cultural transformation we all seek for Taunton.
